How much is a human life worth?

Today, Barack Obama issued an executive order changing government policy about the federal funding of embryonic stem cells.  It’s nice to know that the President of the United States can do something other than fret over that big fat meany Rush Limbaugh, however, this, like his abomination of a stimulus package, is an effort doomed to failure.

There are many issues in the world that could be described as being a “gray area”.  Embryonic stem cell research is not one of those.  Taking the embryonic stem cells destroys a life.

There are two important things to remember here.

1) There is no source of embryonic stem cells that has not destroyed a life.

2)  Any cure developed from embryonic stem cells will either require treatment of anti-rejection drugs to keep your immune system from destroying the foriegn tissue, or will require for a clone to be generated from your genetic material that will subsequently be destroyed and its cells harvested.

Given the treatments that are being developed using adult stem cells and umbilical cord blood, where there is absolutely no ethical quandary, there is simply no excuse for continuing down this road.

May God have mercy on us for our blatant disregard for His greatest creation – human life.
